Job Description

The City of Redlands Planning Division has an opportunity for one professional planner position to work in Current Planning, with opportunities to also be involved with Historic Preservation and Advance Planning assignments. The Planning Division has a total of five planners, supplemented by the use of Planning consultants and environmental consultants as-needed. The Planning Division receives a wide variety of project applications each month (such as residential, commercial, industrial, hotels, general plan amendments, zoning code amendments, Mills Act contracts and historic property designations, etc.). The Planning Division also provides staff support to the Planning Commission, the Historic & Scenic Preservation Commission, and the Minor Permit Exception Committee. Position to be filled depending on level of experience. New graduates are encouraged to apply! Closes on 7/08/2024 at 5:00 PM Pacific. Junior Planner: This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the higher level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Exercises no supervision. Assistant Planner: This is the limited experience level in the professional Planner class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Associate Planner level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Assignments require the application of fundamental planning principles. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Assistant Planner level are normally filled by advancement from the Junior Planner level with one year of experience, successful performance, management recommendation, and budget availability. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the Assistant Planner level. Associate Planner: This is the full journey level in the professional Planner class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Assistant Planner level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including responsibility for the application of professional knowledge and skills to various municipal planning problems and projects. Responsibilities include the preparation of specific reports and plans with opportunity for working independent­ly and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. May exercise leadership over lower level staff. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Associate Planner level are normally filled by advancement from the Assistant Planner level with three years of experience, successful performance, management recommendation, and budget availability. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the Associate Planner level. Required Skills / Experience / Education

Education - Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning or a related field. Experience - Junior Planner: None required. Previous internship experience desirable. Assistant Planner: One year of planning experience (may be internship experience). Associate Planner: Three years of professional planning experience.
