Job Description

The City of Coachella, located at the eastern edge of the world-famous Coachella Valley and within Riverside County, covers 32 square miles, serves over 45,000 residents, and is 130 miles east of Los Angeles. The City is seeking an experienced and forward thinking Municipal Urban planner to serve as Community Development Director. The ideal candidate will be collaborative leader that possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrates strong knowledge of environmental planning, and has the proven ability to advance housing and economic  community development programs. This position is a key member of the City’s executive team and reports to the City Manager. This position performs the full range of community development services functions and duties including the application of theories, principles, and contents of General Plan, land use, zoning, subdivision, and urban planning regulations, natural resource protection, environmental laws, site planning, architectural review, subdivision design, land use, and other analytical studies, evaluating alternatives, and making sound recommendations as well as conduct effective negotiations and effectively represent the City and the department in meetings with governmental agencies, contractors, vendors, and various businesses, professional, regulatory, and legislative organizations.

Required Skills / Experience / Education

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in community development, urban planning, civil engineering, or a related field and seven (7) years of management and/or administrative experience in community development, urban planning, and project administration, including five (5) years of supervisory experience. A Master’s degree in a related field is desirable.

Salary Range

$179,737.22 - $218,471.71
